Animals are for life!

AN ANIMAL IS FOR LIFE NOT JUST FOR CHRISTMAS

PLEASE – PLEASE – PLEASE do not be tempted to give ANY animal as a present this Christmas, whether it be as a surprise or with the persons knowledge. It is THE worst time of year to introduce a new animal into the household.  MANY animals will be abandoned over or after the festive season, I am not just referring to kittens/cats/puppies or adult dogs the small animals will also fall victim to the Christmas trade.

We have rescued small animals here – only on a very small scale – but as with cats and dogs it is an ongoing problem and unfortunately is added to this time of year.

If you know of someone planning to give an animal as a present PLEASE try and dissuade them and give them the reasons why. With small animals eg rabbits, guinea pigs, mice, rats etc there may not be suitable housing for them, has appropriate food been provided, do they have a suitable and safe place to place the cage; especially if there are other animals in the household, do they know how to care for the animal properly and know its social needs etc – unless the person concerned has gone into owning a pet thoroughly the chances are the animal will not receive the care it obviously deserves.

ALL reliable Rescue Centres will cease homing about 7-10 days before Christmas and will not re-home then before 2nd January.  We have already been asked by one person wanting to purchase their ‘Christmas Present’ from us – and there will be more !!

Most people, if it is explained to them, will realise it is not a good time to introduce a new animal and will be prepared to wait, but we need to get the message across for the sake of the many animals this festive season.

MAY I TAKE THIS OPPURTUNITY TO WISH YOU AND YOUR PETS A VERY HAPPY CHRISTMAS AND NEW YEAR AND TO THANK YOU FOR ALL YOUR SUPPORT IN SO MANY WAYS

From Nikki and all at Feline Welfare
